Art Center Features Russ Widstrand

A Q&A from Art Center College of Design’s Alumni Tumblr page… What have been the greatest rewards and challenges you’ve encountered on your current path? I graduated from ArtCenter in 1982 as a photography major. Since then, incredible challenges have taken place in the photography industry, most of them in the last 15 years. The most impactful []

Two Party System

Ideas represented through images are my passion in photography. After 40 years in the art form, a pretty picture holds little interest for me, they can be found by the millions on the web. My approach inclines toward commentary and concept, even in the face of a populace seemingly indifferent to such notions. This image []

The Four Pops

I have always been a fan of the painters Wayne Thiebaud and Paul Wonner. They both glorify everyday objects and lift them, through their vision and skill, to the heights of art. Such was the inspiration for my image, shot and submitted for today’s Daily Photo Game. Robert’s cool image “Shruburbia” gave me the numerical []

Danger Ahead

Satire is a fun thing to play with in photography. It’s something I think about all the time. My image, shot for today’s Daily Photo Game play’s with this notion on a couple of levels. Our new streetcar in Portland has these cycling “warning” signs along the line, when I first saw them I thought []

Mr. Nut Case

On a recent walk with my wife here in Portland, I couldn’t help but be inspired by all the “stuff” laying on the sidewalk from the latest windstorm. I was immediately taken with the Chestnut tree seed pods, the yellow spiky balls I used for eyes. They looked so expressive, kind of furry and empathetic. []

Inside Out

In considering Robert’s beautiful still life “4 Poms” for the DailyPhotoGame.com, I faced a dilemma. How would I take the conversation further and not be repetitive in the genre? Robert reveals the inside of one of his pomegranates, and that idea took hold during my morning brainstorming. I also liked the notion of impressions/depressions, rather []

Legends

I shot this documentary image in Hollywood while attending college in the early 80’s. I have always loved it, and the Game gives me an opportunity to have it be seen in the light of day. This street scene has a wonderful composition, it is fantastic dance between the larger-than-life celebrities and the “little people” []

The Model Man?

Again we find Barbie’s friend Ryan featured at the Daily Photo Game. Robert’s image led me to all kind of thoughts about male stereotypes, archetypes and body expectations. Women typically bear a larger burden for body expectations, however I thought I would investigate the male ethos around this social affliction. I choose a satirical approach, []

Leaf Less

My play for today’s Daily Photo Game takes us into one of my favorite times to make photographs, night-time. Robert’s lovely still life of the lone leaf prompted me to consider thinking of my response in a less linear fashion… leaf, leaves, leaf-less. Ah ha! I love photographing trees, and this shot combines two of my favorite []

Pictured

It seemed to me that the DailyPhotoGame.com could use a twist in the Conversation.  So rather than submitting another abstraction I thought I would play off the patterns of Robert’s rustic image with this people shot. While out looking for interesting elements to shoot for the Game, I drove by this group of young photographers and their photo-session []
