Two Party System

Ideas represented through images are my passion in photography. After 40 years in the art form, a pretty picture holds little interest for me, they can be found by the millions on the web. My approach inclines toward commentary and concept, even in the face of a populace seemingly indifferent to such notions. This image []

John Cage and Grammy Award

I photographed John Cage – the progressive composer – in the late eighties for the LA Festival of the Arts, Rick Miramontez client. Recently it came to my attention that Mr. Cage – now sadly deceased – was receiving a special merit award from the Grammy’s. The John Cage Trust (JCT) has made extensive use []

Danger Ahead

Satire is a fun thing to play with in photography. It’s something I think about all the time. My image, shot for today’s Daily Photo Game play’s with this notion on a couple of levels. Our new streetcar in Portland has these cycling “warning” signs along the line, when I first saw them I thought []

Legends

I shot this documentary image in Hollywood while attending college in the early 80’s. I have always loved it, and the Game gives me an opportunity to have it be seen in the light of day. This street scene has a wonderful composition, it is fantastic dance between the larger-than-life celebrities and the “little people” []

The Model Man?

Again we find Barbie’s friend Ryan featured at the Daily Photo Game. Robert’s image led me to all kind of thoughts about male stereotypes, archetypes and body expectations. Women typically bear a larger burden for body expectations, however I thought I would investigate the male ethos around this social affliction. I choose a satirical approach, []

Shafer Vineyards Chooses Portland Locations

Russ Widstrand Photographer identified, sourced and secured 3 locations for a Shafer Vineyard’s still and video  shoot. Widstrand then photographed the final production over three days, personally negotiating with each location and homeowner. The locations in Lake Oswego, Eastmoreland and Downtown Portland were selected for their unique and differentiated narratives: a residential cocktail party, an outdoor []

Water Falling

Water continues to be a theme at the Daily Photo Game and I decided to follow suit. This image of water falling off of a high-end water feature captivates me. I love the way the late afternoon sunlight rakes across the drops providing a surreal curtain from which to shoot through. Additionally, the feature itself casts a []

Pictured

It seemed to me that the DailyPhotoGame.com could use a twist in the Conversation.  So rather than submitting another abstraction I thought I would play off the patterns of Robert’s rustic image with this people shot. While out looking for interesting elements to shoot for the Game, I drove by this group of young photographers and their photo-session []

Dandy Man

My shoot for today’s Game day took an unexpected turn. Upon seeing Robert’s colorized palm trees, what came to mind for me was Dandelions. Their form is the closest thing to a palm tree here in the Northwest and I liked the similar – but different take on the idea. I captured many views of []

“Untitled”

I really liked Robert’s image “Six O Eight”, it has beautiful lines, light and negative space. My “Conversation” (link to new book) with his image speaks to the lines and forms present in his capture, although in a more high key manner. I thought that flipping the tonality of the image – from shadow to light []
