Dutton Residence

About a two years ago, I got a call from my best friend of 50+ years, he and his wife were knocking down their late 1930’s California bungalow and going modern. As soon as I saw the initial renderings I knew I wanted to be involved in photographing this powerful architectural statement. Michael Dutton and I grew up together as []

Fully Baked

My new image for the DailyPhotoGame.com. Robert”s storefront bakery image, “Hansel and Gretel”, had so much color and pattern to it, this got me thinking. I know of a local house that embodies the local saying “Keep Portland Weird”. The house’s bright colors, objects d’art, the signage and all of the rest of it is []

Legends

I shot this documentary image in Hollywood while attending college in the early 80’s. I have always loved it, and the Game gives me an opportunity to have it be seen in the light of day. This street scene has a wonderful composition, it is fantastic dance between the larger-than-life celebrities and the “little people” []

Abandoned Paper Mill

I recently was invited to take a tour of the Blue Heron Paper Mill, now defunct, abandoned and destined for gentrification. The site is literally right on the Willamette River in Oregon City. This is the kind of special place where Native Americans used to pluck salmon from the waterfalls, but is now damed for []

Shafer Vineyards Chooses Portland Locations

Russ Widstrand Photographer identified, sourced and secured 3 locations for a Shafer Vineyard’s still and video  shoot. Widstrand then photographed the final production over three days, personally negotiating with each location and homeowner. The locations in Lake Oswego, Eastmoreland and Downtown Portland were selected for their unique and differentiated narratives: a residential cocktail party, an outdoor []

Pictured

It seemed to me that the DailyPhotoGame.com could use a twist in the Conversation.  So rather than submitting another abstraction I thought I would play off the patterns of Robert’s rustic image with this people shot. While out looking for interesting elements to shoot for the Game, I drove by this group of young photographers and their photo-session []

Mini-Mall

What to do. What to do. I saw many things in Robert’s architectural image: form, color and typography. In contemplating these elements for the Daily Photo Game  I spent the first half of the day shooting various images of storefront architecture here in Portland, some were reflected into glass. I got some ok images, but adding another []
